Yonge + Eglinton Pharmacy's Education and Support for Chronic Pain

ree

This month aims to raise awareness of chronic pain and how it affects the lives of millions of Canadians. More than just a symptom, chronic pain is a disease in and of itself that can impair mental health, sleep, mobility, and general quality of life.

We believe that raising awareness and educating people are crucial first steps towards improving care.

Since chronic pain is frequently unseen, many people who experience it feel alone or misunderstood. By increasing awareness, we can dispel the stigma, draw attention to the resources that are available, and motivate those who are experiencing pain to get help.

Canada's Chronic Pain

Chronic pain impacts an estimated 8 million Canadians (Government of Canada, 2023), making it one of the most prevalent yet little-known health conditions in the nation. The Canadian Pain Task Force (CPTF) was created in 2019 to address this issue and offer recommendations to the federal government about pain management, prevention, and enhanced assistance for individuals experiencing pain.

Conditions, including arthritis, migraines, nerve damage, or the aftereffects of an injury, can all cause chronic pain. It lasts for months or even years, unlike temporary discomfort, and frequently necessitates a thorough treatment strategy.

Options for Caring for and Treating Chronic Pain

Patients may be referred to a pain clinic for specialist care if a physician or nurse practitioner diagnoses chronic pain. The Government of Ontario claims that the individualized care provided at these clinics may consist of the following (Ontario.ca, 2023):

  • Counselling and education to better comprehend suffering

  • Exercise guidance and physical treatment

  • Modifications to lifestyle and self-management resources

  • When necessary, medications

In order to achieve the best results for children and teens, pain clinics usually employ a family-centred approach, incorporating parents and caregivers in the care process.
