World Osteoporosis Day: Strong Bones, Strong You

ree

Every year on October 20, communities around the world unite to raise awareness about osteoporosis — a condition often called the “silent thief.”

We’re committed to bringing this awareness to our own community, inspiring everyone to take care of their bone health and work together toward a stronger, healthier future.

What Is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to lose their strength and become fragile. Even a simple fall, bump, or lift can lead to a fracture. It most often affects the spine, hips, wrists, and shoulders and is most common in adults over 50. (Source: Osteoporosis Canada)

Because it develops silently, many people don’t realize they have osteoporosis until after their first broken bone.

Osteoporosis in Canada

  • 2.3 million Canadians are currently living with osteoporosis

  • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will break a bone due to weak bones

  • 80% of fractures in women over 50 are linked to osteoporosis

  • Fractures from osteoporosis are more common than heart attacks, strokes, and breast cancer combined

These numbers show how important it is to protect our bone health throughout life.

How to Keep Your Bones Strong

Here are some simple ways to build and maintain bone strength:

1. Eat well for bone health
  • Choose foods rich in calcium (like dairy products, tofu, nuts, and leafy greens).

  • Get enough vitamin D — it helps your body absorb calcium.

  • Include protein and other nutrients to support bone building.

2. Stay active
  • Do weight-bearing exercises such as walking, dancing, or climbing stairs.

  • Add resistance training to strengthen muscles and support your bones.

  • Practice balance exercises to help prevent falls.

3. Avoid harmful habits
  • Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake — both weaken bone structure.

  • Review your medications with your healthcare provider if you’re at risk for bone loss.

4. Know your risk
  • If you’re over 50, have a family history of osteoporosis, or have already had a minor fracture, talk to your healthcare provider about a bone density test.

  • Early screening and treatment can help prevent future fractures.
