Every October, pink ribbons remind us of the importance of breast health. Known as Pink October, this month is dedicated to raising awareness, encouraging early detection, and supporting those affected by breast cancer.
At Yonge + Eglinton Pharmacy, we see this month not just as a time to raise awareness but also as a time to celebrate progress, share hope, and empower our community to take proactive steps toward better health.
Six important reasons to embrace Breast Cancer Awareness Month:
1. More cancers are found early — and outcomes are better
Thanks to organized screening programs, over 80% of breast cancers in Canada are diagnosed at an early stage 1. When caught early, treatments are often simpler, recovery is faster, and survival rates are extremely high — in some cases reaching 93–100%
2. A healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer
While not all cases are preventable, research shows that healthy lifestyle choices can lower risk. Maintaining a balanced diet, staying active, limiting alcohol, avoiding smoking, and keeping a healthy weight are all steps that can make a positive difference.
3. Screening saves lives
Mammograms remain the most reliable screening tool for breast cancer. Provincial screening programs in Canada invite women between the ages of 50 and 74 for regular mammograms, usually every two years.
If you have a family history or higher risk factors, talk to your doctor about starting screening earlier.
Screening can detect cancer before symptoms appear, which makes treatment more effective.
Encouraging loved ones to book their mammograms is one of the simplest, most powerful actions we can take this October.
4. Treatment keeps getting better
New therapies, including targeted and hormone treatments, mean care is more effective and often less invasive. In fact, some women with early-stage breast cancer are now able to avoid chemotherapy altogether.
5. More women are thriving after treatment
The good news: the 5-year survival rate for Canadian women with breast cancer is now 89%. Many women finish treatment, go on to live cancer-free, and continue to thrive thanks to advances in care and strong community support.
6. No one has to face this alone
From peer support to healthcare teams, there are more resources than ever for women and families affected by breast cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society offers a wide range of free programs and services, including peer support, a community helpline, and practical guidance for people living with cancer and their families.
At Yonge + Eglinton Pharmacy, Kathe and our caring team are also here to provide compassionate support, medication guidance, and encouragement every step of the way.
This October, let’s wear pink, spread awareness, and encourage early checks. Together, we can make a difference
